Where the numbers come from, how they're compiled, and where the gaps are. We'd rather be clear about the limits of the data than overstate it.
Where the data comes from
Core match data — results, starting line-ups, substitutes, goalscorers, red cards, attendances, league tables and cup progression — is compiled from mufcinfo.com, and covers the full history from 1886-87 to the present.
Advanced statistics are layered on top for more recent seasons:
- Premier League match data — assists, goals and minutes for Premier League matches from 1992-93 (and major cup competitions from 1993-94) onward; plus yellow- and red-card events with minutes for Premier League matches from 2024-25 onward.
- Transfermarkt — minutes played and assists, from 2016-17 onward.
- FBref — shots, expected goals (xG) and assists (xA), possession, formations, referees and captains, for 2017-18 to 2023-24.
How it's compiled and updated
The raw sources are processed by a documented data pipeline into a set of clean, structured tables. The website is then generated from that database at build time, so the same underlying figures power every match, player and season page. Rebuilding the site refreshes the data; current-season results and standings update as the season progresses.
Known gaps & caveats
We think it's important to be upfront about where the record is incomplete:
- Advanced stats are recent only. Pre-2016 player pages show appearances and goals, but not minutes, shots or xG — those simply weren't recorded in the sources for older eras. Assists are the exception: they go back to 1992-93 for Premier League matches (and to 1993-94 for the major cups), via the Premier League data feed.
- Assists don't reach back before 1992-93. There is no assist data before the Premier League era, and the very earliest coverage (1992-93) is league-only, with cup assists following from 1993-94.
- xG/xA is frozen. Expected-goals data runs 2017-18 to 2023-24; the upstream source stopped publishing it in January 2026, so it is not available for more recent matches.
- Card minutes are partial. Red cards are recorded throughout, but the minute of a card is only available from 2017-18 onward, and yellow cards are not available before 2017-18.
- Recent advanced match data has gaps. Possession, formation and referee data may be missing for many 2024-25 and 2025-26 matches.
- A few league tables are missing. Six early seasons (1892-93, 1898-99, 1899-1900, 1910-11, 1911-12, 1919-20) have full match results but no league standings.
- The earliest seasons are sparse. 1886-1891 were FA Cup-only campaigns predating the Football League, so those pages carry minimal context.
